A Blind Sister’s Gift: Weaving Hope, One Stitch at a Time

In the heart of the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia, a remarkable act of love and faith is unfolding. Sister Phillis, a beloved member of the community, is blind, yet she “sees” the needs of others with a profound clarity of heart. With hands guided by love, she knits adorable baby hats for the families served by our Food Pantry.

These beautiful, hand-knitted hats are a central part of our “Baby Bundles” program, which provides essential items to expecting mothers and those who have just welcomed a new baby. Sister Phillis recently donated 20 newborn hats in various colors, each one a testament to her spirit of generosity and prayer. We give out an average of five baby bundles a month, and her contribution will bring joy and warmth to many families.

The Benedictine motto, “Ora et Labora” (Pray and Work), is a living tradition for the sisters. In this spirit, Sister Phillis’s work is an act of prayer, a quiet but powerful ministry that mirrors the compassion of Christ. It reminds us of the importance of selfless giving, especially during the Lenten season. This time of spiritual reflection and almsgiving is a call for Catholics to deepen their faith by serving those in need.

This mission is at the core of our work. Our Baby Bundles are a testament to the power of partnership, made possible by the generosity of organizations like the Benedictine Sisters and the Greater DC Diaper Bank. We distribute over 16,566 diapers and average of 5 baby bundles monthly to our clients, ensuring that even the smallest among us are cared for.

Sister Phillis’s story is a powerful reminder that every act of kindness, no matter how small, can make a significant difference. We are blessed to serve an average of over 2,500 children monthly in the households of the families we support.

Inspired by Sister Phillis please consider helping us continue this vital work. Your support allows us to provide for the most vulnerable in our community.
